About French Quarter

French Quarter was established by convicts and prostitutes from France who were freed on the condition that they would relocate to Louisiana. The area where they settled was called the Vieux Carre, now French Quarter.

Today French Quarter is home to New Orleans music venues, French Market, restaurants, art galleries, gift and antique shops, boutiques, historic houses, rustic iron gates and simple cottages. The poboy, a New Orleans original sandwich, is believed to have been created in a French Quarter restaurant to feed transit strikers.

Bourbon Street is the place to go to experience the music of New Orleans. It is home to the music of New Orleans musicians including Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong, Wynton Marsalis and Allen Touissant. House of Blues is located on Bourbon Street. Annual musical events associated with Bourbon Street include Satchmo SummerFest, the French Quarter Festival, and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.
